Ravi Sabapathy, Psy.D
Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Ravi Sabapathy is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with specialized training in medical psychology, pain management, and bariatric psychology. He has been the primary psychologist for the Bariatric Center of Kansas City since its inception. He also works in the Shawnee Mission Medical Center Pain Clinic with a variety of patients experiencing various chronic pain disorders. He serves as a consultant-liaison to all medical departments in the hospital primarily when there is a psychological or behavioral factor related to a patient’s medical condition. Another area Dr. Sabapathy holds an interest is in performance enhancement. In this capacity he serves as a consultant to various athletic facilities/organizations, including the Kansas City Chiefs.

Dr. Sabapathy completed his undergraduate training in psychology at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He received his master’s and doctoral degrees in clinical psychology from the Minnesota School of Professional Psychology which is a private, specialized institution specifically geared at training clinical psychologists. While there he also completed a one-year clinical practicum at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He completed his pre-doctoral residency at the Oklahoma Health Consortium in Oklahoma City. During his pre-doctoral residency, Dr. Sabapathy trained more specifically in the area of health and rehabilitation psychology. This led him to complete a post-doctoral fellowship in Lincoln, Nebraska, in medical psychology and psychopharmacology.

Dr. Sabapathy has performed over 1500 pre-operative psychological evaluations for both the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and the Lapband procedures. Patients have found his approach to be not only sensitive and empathic to the specific needs of the bariatric patient, but also an integral component to their overall weight loss success. Dr. Sabapathy assists patients both pre- and post-operatively to help maximize mental and behavioral patterns in efforts of optimizing the overall weight loss experience. He is excited to be a part of the Bariatric Center of Kansas City and working on a comprehensive, multi-modal weight loss team that addresses a patient’s complete physical and mental wellness.
