Am I a Candidate for Surgery?

The Bariatric Center of Kansas City specializes in the surgical treatment of morbid obesity. To be a candidate for any type of weight loss surgery, a patient must be morbidly obese as recognized by the National Institute of Health in its 1985 Consensus Statement. Your overall success, health and safety are the most important considerations for us. That is why we consider the following guidelines to determine whether you are an appropriate candidate for surgery.

Body Mass Index

Physicians and healthcare professionals commonly use the body mass index (BMI) as a way of helping to determine obesity. BMI is a number calculated by dividing a person's weight in kilograms by his or her height by square meters. Although a patient's BMI does not actually correlate in terms of body fat or overall health condition, it is a means of categorizing weight in terms of nationally recognized standards. A link to the BMI calculator below can help you determine if you are a candidate for surgery.

Ideal Body Weight should also be taken into consideration.

You are considered morbidly obese and a candidate for surgery if:

  • You are more than 100 pounds over your ideal body weight
  • Your BMI is 35 to 40 and you have one or more severe co-morbid conditions, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, sleep apnea, etc.
  • Your BMI is 40 or above

Age

Patients between the ages of 18 and 65 are considered for candidacy in our weight loss surgery program. Exceptions to these age restrictions may be made depending on the patient’s general health and insurance coverage/status. We evaluate each patient on a case-by-case basis carefully to determine risk versus benefit in deciding if they are a good candidate for surgery.

Prior Weight Loss Surgery

Our surgeons do not perform weight loss surgery revisions or reversals.

Evaluation Process

Our program is comprised of a team whose members will evaluate you for candidacy in many different ways:

  • Review of your health history and your past medical records,
  • Cardiac and pulmonary clearances,
  • Clinical psychological evaluation,
  • Consultation with a registered dietician,
  • Specialized lab testing,
  • Consultation(s) with your surgeon and
  • Communication with the nurses or coordinator in our program.

Through the evaluation process, we are not only trying to establish if you will be a good candidate for surgery, but we are also working towards the mutual goal of a safe and successful surgical outcome!
